Leash Training Your Cat

What do you do when your cat really wants to go outside, but you are concerned about his safety and well-being?

surprise13.jpg (16405 bytes)The best answer is leash training! Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to train almost any cat to walk on a leash. Bengal cats adapt very well to this activity due to their natural adventuresome and fearless natures, but with a little patience and perseverance, almost any cat can learn to enjoy outings on a leash.

Most pet stores stock a variety of cat harnesses. Choose one that is soft - yet sturdy to prevent your cat from breaking loose during his walk. Begin acquainting your cat to the harness by simply leaving it near your cat's favorite sleeping spot and letting his natural curiosity take over. After a day or so, once the cat has become used to the device, slowly, over the next few weeks, fasten the harness on your cat for increasing periods of time, starting with just the overhead portion and eventually moving to the underbelly portion. Be sure to reward him with plenty of praise and even a cat treat or two.

After a few days of practice in your home, you and kitty should be ready to face the great outdoors. Just keep in mind the golden rule with cats - let them think they are taking you for a walk!

Happy trails!
