The Bengal Cat: A Tail of Two Kitties
With it's wild, exotic looks and sinewy grace and agility, the Bengal Cat looks very much like the real "king of the jungle" - the Leopard. But is the Bengal Cat a Leopard? Well, the answer is yes - and no.
|
|
The origins of the Bengal Cat stem from the first pairing of a wild Asian Leopard Cat, a small, forest-dwelling cat found in Asia and India, and a domesticated cat, which occurred more that 35 years ago. It is from this lineage that the Bengal obtained it's gorgeous, shiny camoflage coat, it's large, perky, attentive ears, it's amazing physical prowess and it's extremely high level of intelligence. But it is from the selective breeding of cats descending from the original cross - at least four generations removed (known as F-4's or SBT's) - that the Bengal cat gets it's playful, laid-back, affectionate, curious and almost dog-like personality. |
Living With A "Lap Leopard"
Bengal Cats can be more fun that a barrel of Monkeys and will provide their owners with hours of daily entertainment! (Who needs TV...?!) They're active, playful, affectionate, adventurous and very curious. They require no special regimen for care or feeding - just lavish them with attention, feed them high-quality cat food, keep their litter-box clean, groom them frequently and kiss them regularly. Bengals get along great with children, adults, other cats, dogs and other animals.
One trait that sets Bengals apart from other cat breeds is their love of water. It is not unusual to see a Bengal jumping into the tub - so be sure to keep the bathroom door closed - unless you want a feline bath partner. Bengals adapt very well to a variety of environments and love to go for car rides. They can also be leash-trained and enjoy going for walks. They tend to be a bit vocal, emitting a deep, raspy mew when they want to tell you something. If you listen carefully, you'll probably figure out what they're after, because Bengals are very intelligent! (So be sure to hide the catnip when they aren't looking!)
Bengals are very special cats who require very special owners! If you have a great home to offer to one of our babies, we would love to talk to you!
