I wasn't too sure about this litter box when I first bought it -- seemed like way to many steps, having to pour one into another, and then sift. BUT.....after only a couple uses I was hooked. I would much rather clean this catbox than the regular ones you have to "manually" scoop (I have one of each now). This box is much faster. And I totally agree with not following the instructions on the box.....do solid-sifting-solid. You won't be sorry. I'm buying a 2nd to replace my other box.

Will not work for Feline Pine, July 26, 2011

This was the third sifting litter box I have tried in my search for one which will work with Feline Pine Original Cat Litter, 40-Pound Bags Again, the holes in the grate are just too big, causing the pellets to fall through. I really wish there was a real feline pine one which had taller sides or shields, as my 2 beautiful kittens are convinced they are soccer players, and I do want to avoid a room full of pellets.

If anyone finds one...let me know...for now my search goes on.

I responded to "MIM" that he/she wasn't using this correctly.
But my annual refresh order just arrived, and it's not MIM who is wrong - the instructions are bad.

If you keep the "screen" layer on top, you will have problems. And I did for a while at first - ten years ago.
Then I figured out that you should let the clumps form in a regular tray. And when you clean, dump that tray into the filter tray. The "unused" clumping litter passes through the filter into the other regular tray. The rest can be dumped into the trash. And sometimes, the clump sticks to the regular tray. Just bump the tray, or use your scraper.
If you rotate the trays this way, you can get a year out of a tray set before the surfaces start to corrode. But the process is so much better than the old way. This is still a 5 star, even though the instructions are less than helpful.

Again - top tray is a normal tray. Middle tray is the screen/filter tray. Bottom tray is a normal tray.
When you clean, pick up the top tray, and dump it into the filter tray (which is on top of the other normal tray). The clumps and solids will now be collected in the filter. Larger clumps will still be attached to the top solid tray. Shake or scrape that into the trash.
Then pick up the filter tray and dump that in the trash.
What you have left is (pretty) clean litter in the bottom normal tray.
Put the filter tray on top of the normal tray that was the top tray, and put the litter-filled tray on top of that. If more litter is needed, pour some in.
And once in a while, throw all of the litter away.
And, once a year, go to Amazon.com and buy a new setup.

Great sturdy and compact litter box that my cat uses just fine. Removed the swing door as my cat does not love these and I am still able to open the top flap or remove top half all together to clean. Very practical!

This litter box is a wonderful idea, it is very sturdy and does have a low profile which works for my apt. Also, it doesn't have the design as every other litter box out there which makes it not so tacky as most other litter boxes. I love the flip top, it has come in very handy. I don't have to take the lid off, which is the best thing about this box. Also, my kitten never has had a covered litter box so I just flipped open the top to make it more open, and gradually moved to closing the top and adding the swing door. UNFORTUNATELY the "large" size of this litter box is slightly small. My kitten is a little over 4 months now, and I'm afraid that once she is bigger, she wont fit in it well. In a little bit, I'm definitely going to have to upgrade to the Jumbo size in order for her not to be cramped while doing her business. Therefore, get this litter box, you'll love it!!! BUT get it in the JUMBO size, and not the LARGE.
